On March 12, 1894, the first bottles of Coca-Cola were sold in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Dr. John Pemberton, a pharmacist in Atlanta, Georgia, had invented Coca-Cola eight years earlier. The drink's popularity quickly spread and customers enjoyed it at soda fountains throughout the South.

The original formulation had both cocaine and alcohol in it, I'd imagine it would of been quite addicting.

Intersting fact to this day it still contains coca leaves they just take out the cocaine alkaloid. Rumor is new coke or coke 2 whatever it was called in the 80's didn't contain the leaves. Just out of curiosity I'd like to try the failed new coke, was too young at the to have tried it.
